Vitamin D2, chemically known as Ergocalciferol, is a ring-opening steroid formed by the breaking of chemical bonds by the photochemical action of steroids, especially by ultraviolet light and ergosterol. Ergocalciferol, which was prepared in the early days, is also known as Viosterol. According to the 2011 diagnostic guidelines of the United States, ergocalciferol may be used as a dietary supplement to supplement vitamin D, and ergocalciferol is equally effective against cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) produced by the skin in response to ultraviolet light. Ergocalciferol is known by a variety of names.
